July 31, 2019: University of California, Santa Barbara, names Kip Bates as associate CISO

“I rely on end users and IT professionals across the campus to do the hard work of securing our systems,” said UC Santa Barbara CISO Sam Horowitz in a press release. “Kip will help me carry the message and coordinate our approach to IT security.”

Bates already manages the campus security awareness program as the security lead for administrative and residential IT. He brings extensive IT and security experience to the task of strengthening the confidentiality, integrity and availability of systems and infrastructure across campus. “Kip will be an indispensable part of many strategic initiatives, including implementation of the new IS-3 systemwide security policy,” Horowitz said.

July 18, 2019: University of Michigan names Sol Bermann as CISO, director of information assurance

Since joining the university in 2011, Bermann has served as the university’s interim CISO, university privacy officer, and IT policy and compliance strategist. He has provided strategic direction in how the institution engages cloud services, developed privacy and ethics guiding principles for learning analytics, coordinated efforts related to securing sensitive research data and university data governance, and co-led efforts related to the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

As CISO, Bermann works across the university’s academic campuses and in partnership with Michigan Medicine to establish and maintain the university’s information security program, while enabling an open and collaboration-rich academic environment.
